Audiologists use this evaluation tool to test young children ranging in ages from 6 months to 30 months. This test is usually performed with the child sitting on their guardian’s lap looking straight ahead. Visual reinforcement audiometry (VRA) uses two speakers that are at a 45 degree angle to the right and left of the child. At this age the child will try to locate where a sound is coming from. Therefore, if a sound source, such as a beep or a loud voice, comes out of the right speaker, at a level they can hear, they will look to the right and try to find it. If they look in the correct direction they are reinforced by an animal that will light up. This test identifies the level a child is hearing using both ears.
