Audiologists are professionals who are trained to diagnose and treat hearing and balance issues. Audiologists receive an Au.D. (Doctorate of Audiology) after completing a graduate program in audiology from an accredited university.

Audiologists work with medical professionals to ensure the highest level of care. They are not retailers. When you have a hearing problem, an audiologist provides the best guarantee that your condition will be accurately diagnosed and your treatment will be perfectly targeted for the issue.

Audiologists make absolutely sure that your hearing problem does not result from a curable underlying cause, before they recommend hearing aids. When hearing aids are recommended, audiologists provide the highest-quality products along with the most comprehensive ongoing care. Audiology clinics do not rely on hearing aid sales and are not incentivized to sell anything to you.

If you’re asking the question, you should probably get a hearing test. Hearing tests are the best way to know for sure that you have hearing loss, and how much.

Typically, someone else notices our hearing loss before we do. If someone in your life has told you that you might have hearing loss, it is worth getting your hearing tested.

Hearing loss is frequently accompanied by tinnitus (ringing in the ears). If you hear your ears ringing a lot, it could be a sign that you have hearing loss.

The Better Hearing Institute and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), both non-profits, recommend getting a hearing test once every decade until age 50, and once every three years after that. Those in higher-risk professions or with medical histories indicating a higher risk of hearing loss should be tested more frequently.

The sooner you notice hearing loss, the sooner you can make interventions in order to prevent further loss. We usually don’t notice that we have any hearing loss until it has progressed to a troublesome degree, so having your hearing ability regularly and accurately measured is an important part of maintaining your best hearing health.

If you have good hearing but are at risk for hearing loss due to occupational or recreational noise hazards, custom hearing protection may be a wise investment. Hunters, musicians, motorcyclists, concert-goers and others can all benefit from custom hearing protection.

Many insurance companies do not require a medical referral to visit Ashland Audiology, although many of our patients do come to us via a doctor’s referral. We also work closely with Ear Nose and Throat of Memorial Medical Center (ENT of MMC) to assist their patients.

Check with your insurance provider to determine whether they cover hearing care expenses. If so, they may require a referral to do so, or may specify which audiology clinics are covered.

Most private insurers do not cover hearing aids, but that is not always true. Check with your provider to see whether they’ll cover any expenses related to hearing care, and if so how much.

Medicare explicitly does not cover hearing aids or hearing exams for the purpose of treating hearing loss. Hearing tests are covered if ordered by a doctor for acute medical reasons.

Medicaid covers hearing aids in many cases. We can help you determine whether you are eligible under your plan.
